#12 물꼬를 트다
[Weekly Korean] '물꼬를 트다 [Mul-kko-reu teu-da]'
Hello Korean learners! Welcome back to this week’s Weekly Korean lesson by Seodang Korean Institute!
Have you ever been in an awkward room where no one wanted to speak first, or felt hesitant to start studying something new until someone took that brave first step? In Korean, when someone opens up a path so that communication, questions, or ideas start flowing smoothly, we say: 물꼬를 트다 [Mul-kko-reu teu-da].
Let’s explore how to use this comforting expression in your everyday Korean!
1. Key Expression: 물꼬를 트다 [Mul-kko-reu teu-da]
Meaning: Paving the way, breaking the ice, or opening the path for something to begin flowing smoothly.
When to use: Use this when someone takes the first step to break the ice—making it much easier for everything else to start flowing smoothly in a conversation, relationship, or project! ('물꼬' refers to the waterway entrance for rice paddies, and '트다' means to open or unblock—so it literally means opening the channel for water to flow!)
2. Practice Dialogue
Here is a quick conversation to see how native speakers use 물꼬를 트다 in daily life:
A: 다들 수줍어서 제가 먼저 질문을 해 봤어요! (Since everyone was shy, I went ahead and asked first!)
B: 덕분에 분위기가 부드러워지고 질문의 물꼬가 터졌네요. (Thanks to you, the atmosphere softened and questions started flowing!)
