[Weekly Korean] '마음이 가볍다 [Mae-um-i ga-byeop-da]'

Hello Korean learners! Welcome back to this week’s Weekly Korean lesson by Seodang Korean Institute!

Have you ever finished a tough presentation, submitted a big assignment, or resolved a stressful issue and felt a heavy burden lift right off your shoulders? In Korean, when you feel relieved and lighthearted after completing a task or clearing your worries, we say: 마음이 가볍다 [Mae-um-i ga-byeop-da].

Let’s explore how to use this comforting expression in your everyday Korean!

1. Key Expression: 마음이 가볍다 [Mae-um-i ga-byeop-da]

  • Meaning: Feeling relieved, unburdened, and lighthearted after resolving a worry or completing a task.

  • When to use: Use this when a heavy load or worry is lifted from your mind—like after finishing a tough exam, submitting a big assignment, or resolving a stressful issue! ('마음' means mind/heart, and '가볍다' means light—so it literally means having a light heart!)

2. Practice Dialogue

Here is a quick conversation to see how native speakers use 마음이 가볍다 in daily life:

  • A: 오늘 한국어 발표 잘 끝났어요?

(Did your Korean presentation go well today?)

  • B: 네, 끝났어요! 큰 일을 마치니까 마음이 아주 가볍네요.

(Yes, it’s finished! Now that the big task is done, I feel so lighthearted and relieved!)

💡 Teacher’s Note

"When Koreans finish tasks big or small, they often add expressions like '아, 이제 살 것 같다!' (Ah, now I feel like I can breathe again!) or '마음이 홀가분하다!' (My mind feels completely unburdened!).

These idiomatic expressions metaphorically describe emotional weight (worries, stress) lifting off rather than physical weight. What is one thing you want to finish this week so your heart can feel '가볍다'?"
