#10 손발이 맞다
[Weekly Korean] '손발이 맞다 [Son-bal-i mat-da]'
Hello Korean learners! Welcome back to this week’s Weekly Korean lesson by Seodang Korean Institute!
Have you ever worked on a group project, played a team game, or studied with someone where everything just flowed without needing long explanations? In Korean, when you have great chemistry and work seamlessly with a partner, we say: 손발이 맞다 [Son-bal-i mat-da].
Let’s explore how to use this comforting expression in your everyday Korean!
1. Key Expression: 손발이 맞다 [Son-bal-i mat-da]
Meaning: Working well together, having great teamwork, being in sync with someone.
When to use: Use this when you work seamlessly with someone, share great chemistry, or operate in perfect sync during group activities, work, or games! ('손' means hand, '발' means foot, and '맞다' means to fit/match—so it literally means your hands and feet are moving as one!)
2. Practice Dialogue
Here is a quick conversation to see how native speakers use 손발이 맞다 in daily life:
A: 우리 오늘 발표 준비 진짜 금방 끝났네요! (We finished preparing the presentation so quickly today!)
B: 맞아요! 손발이 아주 잘 맞아서 금방 끝난 것 같아요. (Right! I think we finished quickly because we were completely in sync!)

💡 Teacher’s Note
Hands and feet ('손' and '발') are body parts that move together naturally. This idiom comes from the idea that when working with another person, they feel as coordinated as your own hands and feet! In Korea, this is one of the highest compliments you can give to a teammate or study partner.
