How to Say "Become — Noun" in Korean: N(이)가 되다

N(이)가 되다 is one of the most common Korean grammar patterns — and

one that many learners find confusing at first!

1. The Core Formula: Keep It Simple!


The grammar pattern N(이)가 되다 is used when a person or thing changes into a

new state, identity, or status.

Choose “N이 되다” or “N가 되다” depending on whether the noun has a final

consonant (받침).

Use N(이)가 되다 when someone becomes a different person, profession, or role.


-Future / Desire Form-

저는 커서 의사가 되고 싶어요.

  • 의사 (doctor) + 가 되다 → 의사가 되다

  • 되고 싶어요 = want to become


-Past Form-

제 친구는 드디어 선생님이 되었어요 (됐어요).

My friend finally became a teacher.

  • 선생님 (teacher) + 이 되다 → 선생님이 되다

  • 되었어요 (됐어요) = became


-Changes in Time, Seasons, or States-

N(이)가 되다 is also used when time, seasons, or situations change.

벌써 밤 12시가 되었네요.

It's already midnight.

  • 밤 12시 (midnight) + 가 되다

  • 되었네요 = has become


-Season-

날씨가 풀려서 이제 봄이 되었어요.

The weather has warmed up, and it has become spring.

  • 봄 (spring) + 이 되다

  • 되었어요 = became

3. Common Mistakes to Avoid


Many English speakers mistakenly use the object particle 을/를 because they think

of "become" as an action verb.

However, 되다 is always used with 이/가, not 을/를.

This sentence is incorrect because should not be used with 되다.

선생님이 되다
